Lifestyle Medicine for Stress Management

"Stress" is a common patient complaint and chronic stress-related symptoms can account for a substantial proportion of primary care office visits. Via an engaging and interactive case study, this online course seeks to train physicians to effectively coach their patients toward positive stress management choices. The case study takes place over several office visits with each encounter presenting a common stress-related problem.

This online course costs $20 and satisfies 1 credit hour.

Lifestyle Medicine for Weight Management

This course seeks to train physicians to efficiently and effectively coach their patients toward improved lifestyle choices.

Lifestyle choices, including tobacco use, poor diet, and inactivity, are at the root of the most prevalent causes of death: heart disease, stroke, and cancer. Lifestyle modification is a cost-effective means to reduce the estimated costs of ~$120 billion for tobacco-related illness and ~$90 billion from sedentary behavior and overweight/obesity annually in the United States alone.

Additional lifestyle factors impacting disease include limited stress coping skills and poor medication compliance.

The impact of these lifestyle choices is well recognized. Therefore, affecting behavioral change and motivating individuals toward better choices is an area of active interest and research.

This online course costs $80 and satisfies 4 credit hours.

Lifestyle Medicine: Prescribing Exercise

This online course introduces students to another facet of Lifestyle Medicine. Because Americans are leading increasingly sedentary lifestyles and are becoming more overweight/obese, there is a need to educate physicians on the benefits of prescribing exercise to their patients. While the benefits of exercise are widely known, physicians do not always have the necessary training to counsel their patients on how to incorporate exercise into their daily routines.

Exercise is Medicine™, which is a nationwide initiative of the American College of Sports Medicine, will equip physicians with the knowledge they need to prescribe exercise to patients in a manner similar to prescribing medication. The ultimate objective of this initiative is to have every physician at every visit prescribe exercise for every patient, as needed and appropriate. The format of the course will be multiple choice, with an explanation as to why a particular answer that is chosen is right or wrong.

This online course costs $20 and satisfies 1 credit hour.
